Musicians acquire efficient ear-training methods to learn fiddling on any stringed instrument. Style is taught tune by tune, with theory lessons embedded in each melody. Harmonies, backup lines and arrangements are created on the fly in class and more informallly in jams, with the emphasis on rhythmic improvisation over a core melody. Teachers are Groovemama members Donna Hébert (fiddle/strings/theory), Jane Rothfield (fiddle/banjo), George Wilson (fiddle/banjo/bass), Max Cohen (guitar/theory/arranging). Groovemama coaches the Great Groove Band of young musicians at Old Songs and Philadelphia Folk Festivals every year and performs nationally for dances and concerts.
