Biography
My name is Bruce, but somehow that got shortened to "Brew," probably because of my liking for "Barley Pop." Becoming an old-time bassist was a long and strange trip indeed.
I started out as your typical 60's rock bassist - huge amps and all, and had a few close calls with success, but never hit the big time. I was too young to make the original scene and just as I matured musically, the scene was gone forever.
I kicked around here and there on the west coast playing rock, blues, jazz, a few studio gigs etc., until moving to the woods of NW PA in '77. Culture shock. Dropped out of society, raised goats, grew veggies, and started building a house, still ongoing. Needed work and couldn't find any there, so we moved to the Cleveland area, where my wife has family. Eventually I realized that I missed being involved with making music, so I went back to school, got a degree in music ed, graduated from Cleveland State in '96 (46 y.o.) and started teaching. Currently teaching music in the Cleveland Schools. Picked up the acoustic bass while at CSU to play in the orchestra (required), and started getting some minor chops at that instrument. Played occasional gigs with occasional people and fell into a relationship with Willy Earl, who is into Delta style blues. It was during his farewell show that I met Rob Rhamey, until recently one of the two fiddle players with the Erie Travelers. We struck up a friendship and he invited me to their next jam. That was a little over a year ago, and I've been learning about and playing old-time ever since. Been to a couple bluegrass jams as well. The history of all this music is just so cool. We've been to the Worley Gardner Fest in Morgantown twice, Elkins, and hope to make it to Clifftop this time around. Missed it last year - so I've gotten to see, hear, and meet many great people, including Charley Burton. We will have the honor of playing for Charlie at Clifftop for his flatfoot dancing workshops. If you don't know him, he's a state and national champ, and still going strong well into his 70's!
I still have the electrics (Jazz, Precision, and a custom made 5-string fretless by Jon Hill). They have been languishing somewhat, 'cause I've really been dedicating myself to acoustic playing.
That's me! I love making music more than most things, and really want to get fully involved in meeting and playing with as many people out there as possible - ergo my being on this site. I never used that word before, but something told me it was time to try it out. Let me know if I misused it!
Happy playing to one and all! Brew in Euclid, OH
