Ohio Choro Club Roda de Choro
A monthly open session dedicated to choro, the old-time acoustic music of Brazil.
Choro music, which dates back to the 19th century, is a charming combination of Latin melodies with samba rhythms, all infused with a free-wheeling, improvisational style reminiscent of dixieland jazz--with some Bach thrown in for good measure.
Following Brazilian tradition, this "roda de choro," or choro circle, moderated by the Ohio Choro Club, is open to anyone who wants to bring an acoustic instrument and sit in (but a friendly warning: the charts are quite complex and take more than a bit of practice to master). Typical instruments include 7-string guitar, mandolin, clarinet, accordion, pandeiro (tambourine), etc. Dancing may also take place at some point, depending on the enthusiasm of the listeners.
The band also often serves free cachorro quente (Brazilian hot dogs) and feijoada (black bean stew), and caipirinhas (cocktails made with Brazilian cachaça rum, lime, and sugar) are also available.
