Oxford Bluegrass and Old Time Music Jam--The Independent Republic of Bluegrass and Old Time/Appalachian Music
We convene on the LAST Thursday of each month and have been meeting for over six years. We encompass a number of ability levels, and we welcome and encourage all to join in: pickers, singers and those who simply want to listen to Bluegrass, Old Time/Appalachian, traditional acoustic music with a bit of old country music as well. We play tunes and sing songs too.
We play a range of instruments including fiddle, (sometimes a viola), bass (tea chest, wash tub and classical), the occasional cello, banjo, guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, dobro and other resonator family members, autoharp, mountain dulcimer and other acoustic instruments that can fit in with this kind of music. However, we would ask you to leave your percussive keys, spoons, accordions and meldoeons at home or to check them with your guns at the door.
We usually begin between 8.30-9.00 p.m. The pub serves good Guinness, Abbot's Ale and the new managers (who are Swiss) do good food.
From Oxford City Centre near the Town Hall, you can catch the X3 and other numbered buses that go south on the Abingdon Road. Get off the bus at the Sunningwell/Lincoln Road stop and cross to the western side where you will be more or less in front of the Duke of Monmouth pub. The car park is a bit smaller than our previous venue, so if you are driving, make sure you arrive early to ensure a space; there is parking on Sunningwell Road, but the street is narrow, and parking can be a bit tight. You could drive to the Redbridge Park and Ride and either walk ack to the pub (about 1/4 of a mile) or take one of the 300 buses to the pub.
If you are on the north end of town, you can catch the 300 Park and Ride going directly to Redbridge along the Woodstock Road. The 19.49 (Radcliffe Infirmary stop) is the last bus that goes all the way to Redbridge. After that time, you need to go into town and catch a bus on the Abingdon Road at Carfax (see above).
Come along or if your are in the area, visiting or working temporarily, stop by and say "howdy" and don't forget to bring your "axe".
My friend Lucy Quinn runs a another jam in the south of the county on the second Tuesday in Wallingford at the Cross Keys pub, just opposite the Kinecroft, village green.
Ya'll come!
