Last year’s 10th Anniversary Concert starring Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys and Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road struck a chord with folks who clamored for more. Lucky for Garner , Lorraine Jordan has a soft spot for her hometown and was eager to partner with the Town to bring world class bluegrass to the Auditorium.
To launch the new series, Lorraine chose the legendary James King who won his eighth Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year Award from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in February. Cultural historian Charles Wolfe wrote: “James King is a rarity: an honest-to-God mountain soul singer who likes it loud and hard, who’s not afraid of emotion and sentiment. James King has carried his heart songs to festivals all over the country and won his share of rave reviews and industry awards. Like generations of Virginia singers before him, he does best what great singers have always done: he finds a good song and he tells a good story.
