Wallingford---South Oxfordshire Bluegrass and Old Time/Appalachian Session

We convene on the SECOND Tuesday of each month and have been meeting for over ten years. We encompass a number of ability levels, and we welcome and encourage all to join in: pickers, singers and as well as those who simply want to listen to Bluegrass and Old Time/Appalachian acoustic music. Lucy Quinn, who convenes the session says: "Sometimes this session contains folk music." She is well-known as a singer and organiser of folk events in the Oxford, South Oxfordshire and Berkshire area (including Wittfest in June and Oxford Folk Club). She and several other members of the session play in the the band accompanying the Appalachian dance group, Cornucopia.

"We sing songs and play tunes on a range of instruments including fiddle, viola, bass (tea chest, wash tub and classical), the occasional cello, banjo, guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, dobro and other resonator family members, autoharp, mountain dulcimer and other acoustic instruments that can fit in. However, we would ask you to leave your percussive keys, spoons, accordions and meldoeons at home or to check them with your guns at the door."

We usually begin between 8.00-8.30 p.m. The pub serves good beer.

From Oxford City Centre, travel south along the Abingdon Road and follow the signs to Wallingford (about 14 miles) until you reach the traffic lights in Wallingford (near the Waitrose). Turn right and drive to the first mini-roundabout (about 1/4 of a mile) at the edge of the village green, known as the Kinecroft.

The pub, The Cross Keys, is on the right. If you make another right turn at the roundabout, you can gain access to the car park at the back of the pub. There are frequent buses from Oxford to Wallingford and back to Oxford; however, the last bus ack to Oxford leaves from the town centre at around 10.15 p.m. So please make sure you know the timetable and/or have transport/lift home.
