Reviews! Reviews!

Sweetie Pie Press - " ryan kamstra's murder folk night at katharine mulherin gallery. great! wonderful! amazing! terrifying! fun! engaging! murderific! pretty!"

Modeled after a Murder Folk Kitchen Party I had at my house in 2008, Murder folk is a self-coined style of folk music where the sentiment and emotive quality grossly exceeds the subject matter, often dealing with subjects of killing your cheating lover, bank robberies, depression-era acts of amoral desperation, disaster capitalism, lewd and unholy courtships, suicide, insanity, bulimia, the dark arts, selling one's soul to the devil, the apocalypse, morbid episodes of unrequited lovesickness, sex sickness, ultraviolence, murderific elisabethan broadsides, anything too much, too little but totally inappropriate and the ever present counter-weight of a dire and vindictive personal deity.

THE IDEA IS I Have Old Timey Sing-Song Sheets and EVERYONE contributes to the band, whether singing, blowing the old jug, shaking the bells, clawing the washinggboard, or loud mumbles "O ya."

THEREFORE, in advance of the night I am actively seeking YOUR REQUESTS FOR SONGS. I already have a pretty fun repertoir: but all your picks will be considered (basically if I can learn them, and in the time allotted, I will). Just reply, AND NUMBER YOUR REQUESTS IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE INCLUDING SONG TITLE AND THE ARTIST WHO PERFORMS THE VERSION YOU ARE THINKING OF. O Yes, I really want to know your favs, but, if asked, you should be able to make the case that your song fits the above detailed criteria of a "Murder Folk Song."

You can also send your request to: murderfolkrequestline@gmail.com. Or ask to be on our regular email list.

I am also looking for guest performers and guest curators. If you have 3-5 murder folk covers of your own, flip us an email!
yours,

scratch kamstra
