our 1st Sunday jam a rousing success
|
Wow, what a fun jam. Met a few new folks, Tom and Alan, who fit right in. OK, let's see, counter clockwise, Tom, Stan, Alan, yours truly, Patrick, Frank, Andy and Ed were in attendance. Looks like we'll be doing some Sunday jams for a change. I enjoyed the slightly more traditional jam style as well as the music choices. Blackberry Blossom was a particular standout. Alan's playing belies the fact that he's only been playing a couple of months, and the sound of that Mando is sublime. Not sure if anyone else noticed, but Tom was rippin up the melody to Blackberry blossom. Anyway, I had a great time and I'm hoping to see Alan and maybe Mike (or anyone else that wants to meet us) at the Infamous Stringdusters show at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck on the 6th of March. The other show of note there is Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys on Feb 21st. The place also has great food, not just bar faire. Thanks for the kind words.
I too had a nice time, and got a kick out of the concept of an odd assortment of grown men (ok, with my lyre story, it might have been "groan" men) sitting around in a basement on a Sunday afternoon trying to make music.
Yes, I noticed and pointed out how much I enjoyed Tom's playing, particularly on part B of Blackberry Blossom. It was the first time I felt like I was actually playing "with" someone, instead of along side them... a peculiar (but quite nice) feeling.
I showed the YouTube video of the Infamous Stringdusters to my bride, and she said "When do we get to see them?"... so, we're in for March 6, and will order our tickets online this week.
So thanks to all, and particularly to Andy and family for their hospitality.

Yup, it was a good'un!
A full house today, and some new faces.
Thanks to everyone for letting 'les bon temps roulez.'
So what's a good day in March for everyone?

Checking in late.
I also enjoyed the jam on Sunday and meeting everyone.
I should be able to make it to the next one in March.
BTW, I learned BB from the http://www.musicmoose.org/ site a couple of years ago. I had tabbed out what the instructor on the video was playing (took me a while to do) and quite a bit of time to make it sound right. I was listening to an audio clip of someone playing it recently on the UMGF forum and because of that I'd been playing it a few times before the jam on Sunday.
Ken thanks for the line-up. I had forgotten some of the members names. Andy & Alan (even though your tab is missing a couple of strings :) ) thanks for the music sheets. Also thanks for the copy of the songbook (special thanks to Twelvestringer for that).

It turns out that I won't be able to see The Infamous Stringdusters on March 6. I signed up to attend the March Mandolin Festival in Concord NH that same weekend. Great instructors (Dave Surrette, Radim Zenkl,Seth Austen and Skip Gorman)... and too good of an opportunity for me to pass up.
