I have a mountain banjo that I picked up a few years ago.
I seem to keep putting it aside for other things although I really want to learn.
I know one song: Cripple Creek. I used to know a few chords but have forgotten them by now.
Playing with a group would really motivate me.

So, there isn't a group yet but I suspect there could be. I know of at least three people in the Springfield area who have asked about teachers or otherwise said they wanted to learn. There are also a couple I know of over in Decatur.
One possible meeting venue I could suggest. On most Sunday afternoons I deliver my son and a friend over in Lincoln Park, picnic area #2 near the Nelson center, for "Amtgard". Sometimes I sit around in my car and play banjo.

Anybody there?
I am really a bit too far away to make it to RL meetings of this group, but interested. I'm a decidedly amatuer 5-string banjo frailer, and would dearly love some pointers and support.
By way of intro, I'm anniemcu, AKA Sarah, from over by Hannibal, MO. I have a neat old Gatcomb from the early 1900's.
I know a few tunes to play, and spent a little time this last year actually learning some chords (well... starting to learn them... I'm sure i haven't practiced in two months, so they are likely only faint glimmers on the horizon of my little mind)
I'm not exactly adept at reading tab, and I think I prefer to learn by ear anyway.
I make a mean batch of brownies, and I share, so... kin ah play? Purty Pleez?

Well, I'm sorry that I had not been watching this, but rather had been paying more attention to the multi-instrument jam we've started here. In case you had not made the connection, I'm the banjo player who visited you folks in Hannibal once--close to a year ago.
I have not been meeting up with many (any) other clawhammer/frailers in the area close to Springfield (IL), although when I went to a bluegrass festival here last weekend I met a few people who were interested--but they also were not local.
If you wanted to make a long trip on some Wednesday, we could meet up at the UIS old-time music jam, 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. ( http://www.folkjam.org/node/4447 ) That might give a chance to work out if there are other times & places. By the way, a number of people here use your chord book, and you might even be able to do some sales if you brought over a few.

Ahah! Hiya Erich!
Thanks much for the invitation! I don't know when we might be able to get there, but it sure sounds like a good thing. We have one other frailer here in our area - in Quincy, actually. I'll let her know about you too.
By the way, I really appreciate those book orders from the Springfield folk!!
