Map selector for events
|
Hi All, We have just rolled out a new feature that allows you to select the location of your event on a map rather than relying solely on the address translator to determine the correct location. Our experience with the address translator (which is provided by Google) has been that it is quite good at finding addresses in the U.S and most of through Canada as well as parts of Europe. However, there are many areas not covered by Google's lookup service and moreover some event locations do not have a fully qualified address. The new map selector will allow you to pick your location on an interactive map in the event Google can't provide the correct location. We still collect an address when you submit the event so that other visitors will have the reference information but after you have submitted the event you will see a tab called 'location selector' along with 'View' and 'Edit' above the event view. Selecting this tab will take you to the map where you can select the location or even directly input the latitude and longitude in case you happen to have that information. If you end up using the map or providing latitude and longitude, we do ask that you still try to provide address information that most closely reflects the map selected location. Once you have selected a spot on the map, this location will override the translated address (if any) but if you want to try translating a different address, just put a new one in the edit form and submit it. We will try to translate the address again and if that fails or returns the wrong location, you can go right back to the map and select a location again. We hope you find the map selector useful and welcome any feedback on this or any of our other features. -Shawn Submitted by shawn on Wed, 2007/10/17 - 8:14pm.

I'm glad the map helped locate the event. Having to place an event somewhere on a university campus or off some lonely stretch of highway were among the cases we were seeing pretty often. Feedback from contributors of those types of events underscored how a feature like this could prove handy.

Slick. I have an event that doesn't get mapped very well as it is on a university campus in a building that doesn't have a real mailing address.
