Jam Comments? What do you have in mind?

I'm just curious, what did you have in mind for the comments that can be attached to the jam "node" information? Submitted by vrteach on Tue, 2007/01/09 - 12:33pm.

I'm glad you did. The sort of exchange you started under that jam is exactly what we hoped that feature would bring.

Erich,
Informal reviews are very appropriate for the comments section under jams. We too are concerned that it might become a bashing by unhappy pickers, but we thought that it was appropriate to give it a try. The folks who post the jams would (I think) appreciate the positive feedback. If the feature is abused we'll disable future posts, scrub the offensive ones and leave the rest in place as a legacy to a more innocent time.
We protect against spam by only allowing registered users like yourself to post. By requiring a valid email address in our registration, we filter out a lot of spam. Persistent folks can still get through, but we'll know enough about them to shut them out of the site and make it more work than it is worth to get back in (there are many behind the scenes features here too).
I didn't realize you were within driving distance of St. Louis. I guess we had enough information to figure it out from the postal code in your registration, but that's not something we go pouring over. I head to St. Louis for work frequently. I'll give you a heads up on the next jam I'll attend there.

Well, my question was prompted by my thought to put up a note saying that I had had a very good time in the "black hairy possums" jam session, saying that it was a friendly and skilled group. But then again, opening this up to positive comments also opens it up to comments from people who might have felt (rightly or wrongly) that they had been slighted and want to hurt the public status of a jam.
Perhaps you need, or already have, guidelines. Maybe some moderation--actually you probably do need that to filter out spam efforts.
Anyway, it seems as though allowing personal opinions to be SO publically available, and SO directly linked to the announcment, might be asking for trouble. Then again, some sort of review could be useful for people who are thinking of traveling some distance to try out a new session. When I began to think of it in that fashion, I became hesitant to post my opinion. This is actually the first public jam session I've ever attended! Every other one has been at parties, camps, or ad hoc playing at festivals (and not too many of any of those, either).

We've gone back and forth on that question between us. In a sense they are a forum about the session, but unlike forums there is not an ability to have a top level topic and a conversation under it. We both think that reduces the value of the comments under jams. We clearly have not hit a point where we think the value is reduced enough to disable the comments, but we have discussed it.
The post you made to banjohangout.org today [1] is the sort of review/feedback we thought might show up. We've also seen a few users augment their listing by posting a comment rather than editing the post, which is not what we thought might show up.
What's your take on them?
