Biginning banjo lessons

I moved to Henderson 18 months ago. I play violin with the Henderson
Symphony Orchestra. I have a guitar and banjo and I confess that the banjo is very challenging! Clearly, I need some guidance-be it some basic lessons, private or in a small group. Not the easiest music instrument to find help with, based upon Google searches. Anyone have suggestions? regards, Will

You do not include the State you are in. I assume there are many towns named Henderson. You need to put your entire profile on this site which will allow other musicians to find you. This site also will lead you to informal jams in which you can meet people who play. If you go, make sure to also take your fiddle as they are harder to find than banjo players. In a pinch, Youtube has some free online basic instruction. There are also some DVD instructional material you can purchase. You could also benefit from the free membership to the "banjo hangout" Lots of advice and material there including tablature. If it is any solace to you, I think the "fiddle" is harder to play than my banjo. Only one goes out in public.

Hi Steve, thanks for taking time to clarify. I am Will's father and want to help him locate some group or individuals in the Las Vegas area that play banjo. Will has played some Mark O'Connor type fiddling and could participate that way. He received a real nice banjo for a college graduation present but hasn't had any instruction. As a musician who can read music, the banjo will still be a challenge, but not quite as rough as for someone who never played a string instrument.
Will works long days and I have more time to do some 'leg work' to try to line up some resources, opportunities. Regards, Harley

Glad to help a little. "Banjo Hangout" website has free tablature or by notation a large volume of banjo music. Tablature is quicker for me to learn song than reading notes. I hope he can locate some Jams where he can pickup some skill. Tell him good luck.
