The Fifth Annual Fortune Lake Festival is right around the corner: Saturday, May 10. Please attend this day of outstanding music and fun. Great food will be provided all day and evening by Keweenaw Fisheries (including fresh cooked whitefish, lake trout, fish chowder, Indian fry bread, Indian tacos and other special treats). The indoor concert hall and classroom venues at Fortune Lake Camp allow a comfortable festival regardless of weather.

The Fortune Lake Camp is located two and one-half miles west of Crystal Falls, Michigan. Music classes and sessions will be held from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM-CT. The Evening Concert is from 6:30 to 9:30 PM-CT.

Headliners for the 2005 festival evening concert include:

·Glen and Judi Morningstar - Glen is a renowned fiddler and dance caller and Judi is one of the best known hammer dulcimer players in Michigan. They are founding members of the Olde Michigan Ruffwater Stringband.

·Duo Borealis - Comprised of Mary Bonhag (voice, fiddle, and mandolin) and Evan Premo (bass and voice), this sought after act, skillfully delivers classical, traditional, folk, and original music.

·Detour - A well-seasoned bluegrass band from “below the bridge” that performs high energy, high quality music that blends original contemporary bluegrass sounds with great traditional favorites.

·Laurel Premo - We have just confirmed that Laurel will MC the evening concert and will certainly play a tune or two from her brand new solo CD, Innertwine.

Morning Classes

·Morning music classes are available for a big variety of interests and instruments including bluegrass guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bluegrass banjo, 5-string kantele, and hammer dulcimer. Each class is 75 minutes long and requires a $10 fee. Participants can register for one or two classes and should bring their instrument(s).

·Two morning events are geared toward families or groups. In each case, special pricing allows a group of children and/or adults to register together for one low price of $10. Corinne Rockow will lead a workshop for children and families (or anyone who would like to try making music in a very informal setting). Corinne brings instruments of all descriptions to share with participants. The other event will introduce “Shape-Note Singing.” Glen Morningstar will teach and lead in this old form of group singing that emphasizes participation rather than performance.

Afternoon Jam and Dance Sessions

·The afternoon “Jam” and “Dance” sessions are for those that want to play their instruments and/or dance. Two concurrent sessions will take place in the afternoon from 1:30-4:30. Glen Morningstar is the featured caller for the afternoon dance session that features contra and mixer dances. Bette Premo & the Front Parlor Dance Band will provide the music. At another venue, members of Detour will kick off the “jam” session by leading a “slow jam” working with participants (who bring their instruments) to play some bluegrass songs. The Jam Session is open to the public at no charge. The Dance Session is $7/person ($5/student).

Tickets and Lodging

·Advanced purchase tickets for the Evening Concert are $10 each ($12 at the door, students are $5 each). Lodging is available at Fortune Lake Camp (call Fortune Lake Camp at 906-875-3697).
