The Huron Township Applefest (a community arts & crafts festival) sponsors the Michigan State Championship Old-Time Fiddlers Contest the first Saturday in October. This contest is dedicated to preserving and promoting the old style Michigan fiddling that was used to accompany square dances at house parties and grange dances many years ago. Contestants are required to play a waltz, a schottische, a jig and a reel, in six minutes, in a style appropriate for dancing. Contestants are judged on Rhythm, Tempo & Timing; Clarity & Intonation; Expression; Repertoire. There is a non-refundable $10 entry fee. The contest is open to all age groups. First prize is $300, second prize is $200, third prize is $100. The contest is held outdoors, so dress warmly. The contest is sponsored by the Huron Township Applefest, Psarianos Violins, DoSan's Awards and the Les Raber Memorial Foundation.
