Besides being a good time for everyone, Saturdays at the Barbershop allow the young to learn from the old and the Piedmont blues tradition to be passed down to the next generation. (from their web site)

Get together with like-minded lovers of folk music and singing! We meet twice a month to sing and play folk songs, most taken from the Rise Up Singing book. Members also bring lyrics to their favorite songs and hand out copies.

If you're familiar with folk music and are not shy about singing, or you play an acoustic instrument, come on down!

We meet the first and third Saturdays of the month from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at an indoor location in Crystal City (Arlington), VA, close to metro. Please be sure to bring a copy of Rise Up Singing, or you can buy one from one of the organizers.

Northern Virginia Hammered Dulcimer Players (NVHDP) is a group of musicians who meet monthly to play together, share tunes, and to socialize over light refreshments the members bring. We usually meet the 4th Saturday of a month. Open to other acoustic instruments as well. Be sure to check the maim web site for the true schedule.

This gathering is not for singing.

Start:

Informal Old Time Music Jam, named for founders Dave and Diane Poe. Players welcome. Meets last Sunday of each month, except for the last Sundays of July and August (due to conflict w/music festivals).
We generally sit in a circle and take turns calling tunes to play. Everyone is welcome.
Jam is at the Washington, VA Fire Hall, which is owned by Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue, a volunteer organization. We typically have 8 - 12 players showing up to play claw hammer banjo, fiddle, guitar, upright bass, mandolin and hammered dulcimer

Start:

Traditional Scottish jam session at Fiona's Irish Pub in Kingstowne, VA near Washington, DC. We are, to my knowledge, the only public Scottish jam in the area.

Though the session is dominated by fiddlers, all appropriate instruments are welcome, within reason (Highland Bagpipes are just too loud, and in the wrong key for session play).
