This is a great jam hosted at St. Matthews United Church of Christ in Riverside, MO. It is put on by the members of the church. It is set up like a concert, with the player's chairs facing an audience, but it is not run like a concert. The song selection passes around the room, and the selections include old-time fiddle, celtic, country and the rare blues/rock number. Acoustic instruments and voices make up the group. The church members kindly "pay" the musicians with home made cookies and cakes. All skill levels are welcome.

This can be a power session with up to 15 musicians sometimes. Very common to see 6-10. We play mainly 'pure drop' traditional irish tunes. ***The craic is mighty***

The Gaf has good food, drinks and a very supportive landlord.

There is always a good crowd of punters, including a bevy of lovely ladies who come for the tunes, drinks, dancing and who generally like to get out of line.

Start:

We do potluck at 6:00 and jam until 10:00. We play the old time fiddle tunes on fiddles, banjos, mandolins, guitars and such. All acoustic.

Our meetings consist of playing ukes, yapping about ukes, and learning about ukes. At each of our gatherings, members are encouraged to print out and bring a new tune. We always try and have some for the novice as well as the more intermediate (should I say advanced?) musicians. There are no egos and everyone is there because they love ukuleles and ukulele music.

We will play the traditional Christmas Carols on string band instruments. Christmas Carols meet all the criterion of fiddle tunes; they are well known melodies ripe for harmonizing and improvisation. Meet at Borders, at 7th and New Hampshire, in Lawrence, at 5:30. We will cross the street to Sunflower Cable Channel 6 to play on the 6:00 News. We will then travel to caroling sites, yet to be named. Please RSVP to ask-a-luthier@sunflower.com. If you can't get to Lawrence in time for the 5:30 kick off, call my cell phone, 785-331-6000, and I'll tell you where we are.
