Bluegrass 'Provenance'
Is there bluegrass 'provenance,' that quality which enhances the value of a particular musician because of his/her experience, the bands in which the performer has played, or perhaps just the performer's reputation?
Following the IBMA World of Bluegrass 2007, there was the usual shuffling of performers--out of and into a variety of bands. That goes on year-'round, but it was particularly noticeable this year around the IBMA.
What can promoters and fans expect from newly created bands--bands formed by members who left other bands to play for somebody else or to form their own new bands? The word is out that certain outstanding performers can get together, never pick one public note together, and yet have a solid year's advance booking, simply based on their names and reputations. How does that work? How often does it succeed?
I think about stuff like this while listening to CDs and waiting in traffic for the light to change. Now, I would like to read your comments.
